Overview Located in the northeast corner of Genesee County, Bergen is bordered by Orleans County to the north, the towns of Stafford and LeRoy to the south, the towns of Byron and Elba to the west, and Monroe County to the east. This small, rural town – the second-smallest in Genesee County – includes the village of Bergen and the hamlets of East Bergen, North Bergen and West Bergen. The village, with sidewalks canopied by old-growth trees, includes the Lake Street Historic District, with buildings with cast-iron storefronts built in the late 19th and early 20th century. Village offices have moved to the Lake Street Historic District in an effort renovate the area and attract businesses. The Bergen Swamp is a unique natural habitat that’s great for exploring, with rare plants and rare and endangered species of animals. White-tailed deer, rattlesnakes and spotted turtles are among the animals you’ll find here. Brockport and the Erie Canal are only nine miles north; Churchville (and Churchville County Park) in Monroe County is less than four miles east. Interstate 490 has an exit in Bergen, making it a bedroom community between the busier Rochester and Batavia. Local Museums/Landmarks The Bergen Swamp is the most visible landmark and is a great place for hiking. The Harford Livery Museum, a relatively new museum, is in the center of town and includes exhibits related to the Civil War. The Bergen Museum of Local History is on Lake Road. Just 10 miles southeast of Bergen is the Genesee Country Village & Museum, a “living history” museum in Mumford (in Monroe County).

Essentials The village of Bergen has a small downtown with a few shops, a well-known pizzeria, and other places to eat. For a greater variety of shopping, residents head to Brockport, which is only nine miles north, or to Batavia, a quick 14-mile trek southwest. Both have supermarkets (Wegmans in Brockport, Top’s in Batavia), and large retailers like Walmart. The village offers lower-cost municipal electricity.. The Byron-Bergen Central School District serves residents here and in the neighboring town of Byron. The closest hospitals also are in Brockport (Lakeside Memorial) and Batavia (United Memorial Medical Center). The Byron Bergen Public Library, covering both communities, is on Lake Road in Bergen. The Newman Riga Library is just east of Bergen in Churchville. The Bergen Post Office is on Rochester Street.

Pros & Cons Small-town living and cheap municipal electricity are big draws here, as well as east access to Interstate 490. Bergen is close to Batavia and Brockport and a quick trip to Rochester via I-490.
