Formerly known as the Ellwanger Barry Neighborhood, for the nurseries operated by the Ellwanger & Barry Co., the name was changed in 2007. The Cinema Theater and Highland Hospital are in the area, as well as Colgate Rochester Divinity School and the German House. The neighborhood is bordered by Highland Park and Highland Avenue, South Avenue, Gregory Street, and South Clinton Avenue.
Local Museums & Landmarks
Highland Park itself is the crown jewel of this neighborhood. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the most revered landscape architect in American history, a man who also designed New York City’s Central Park. Highland Park rests in a series of hills and valleys and is a completely planned arboretum or “tree garden.” The park has more than 500 varieties of flowering shrubs and also contains the Lamberton Conservatory. The Highland Bowl is overseen by a statue of Frederick Douglass.
