Overview Corn Hill is the oldest and perhaps most historic residential neighborhood in the city. The neighborhood was named for the corn fields that were abundant here at one time. Corn Hill is at the edge of downtown and has many beautiful Victorian homes that have been renovated in recent years. The area is bounded by Interstate 490 to the north; the Genesee River, along Exchange Boulevard, to the east; and Ford Street to the south and west. The Corn Hill Arts Festival, held every summer, is enormously popular and rated among the top 200 in the nation. Proximity to downtown means many popular establishments are within walking distance. The Corn Hill Landing Development in recent years has added a slew of dining and drinking establishments as well as new housing. The neighborhood association is particularly strong in Corn Hill. Local Museums & Landmarks Clarissa Street is one of the most historic streets in Corn Hill and is home to the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, which was founded on Favor Street in 1830 and remains Rochester’s oldest African-American institution. Clarissa Street was well-known for its jazz clubs, such as the long-gone Pythodd Club as well as Dan’s Restaurant and Grill, which later became Shep’s Paradise Lounge and now is now as The Clarissa Room.

Essentials The development of Corn Hill Landing has added several nightclubs and restaurants to the area in recent years. There’s a coffee shop, salon, handyman services, a print and copy center, liquor and wine store, among other businesses. The neighborhood association oversees a Corn Hill Tool Library, where residents can borrow tools for a small fee. The Downtown (Central) Library is nearby. The closest post office is at the Federal Building on State Street. Corn Hill has some neighborhood delis and markets, but the closest supermarket is either a Tops on Lake Avenue or a Wegmans on East Avenue, near Winton Road.

Pros & Cons Corn Hill offers old-style charm and a tremendously close-knit community. The riverfront has been developed recently and continues to evolve. The area is a madhouse during the arts festival, when motor vehicles are not allowed access. Walkability to downtown is a plus.
