Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood - Rochester, NY

Overview Just west of downtown Rochester, the Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood’s biggest attraction is the Madison Street home of Anthony, the noted suffragist and civil rights leader, who was arrested at her home in 1872 for voting. This historic neighborhood is the only surviving example in the city of an early 19th century tract development that retains its original public square and alley configuration. The area, in southwest Rochester, is encircled by Brown Street, Interstate 490, Broad Street, West Main Street and Jefferson Avenue. Businesses are moving in and the neighborhood has begun a transformation. Local Museums & Landmarks The Anthony Museum & House demonstrates the lifestyle of and tells the story of Anthony, who fought for women’s right to vote and equal rights for all. In the public square outside the museum is a sculpture of Anthony and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, another former Rochester resident, having tea. Nearby is the venerable Nick Tahou’s restaurant, in a former train station on West Main and home to the trademarked Garbage Plate. The Frederick Douglass Resource Center, at 36 King St., is open by appointment.

The closest post offices are on Thurston Road and at the Federal Building downtown. Pros & Cons This historic neighborhood has gone through some tough times but appears to be bouncing back. Spacious homes are quite affordable. This area is still developing and appears to be on the upswing.
