East Avenue - Rochester, NY

Overview The East Ave neighborhood is one of the liveliest and culturally richest neighborhoods in all of Rochester and certainly in the downtown area. The East Ave is the home of the Eastman School of Music and the Eastman Theatre, and the headquarters of the thriving Rochester International Jazz Festival and several summertime street festivals each called the “East End Fest.” Bars popular with the younger crowd are all over the East Avenue-Alexander Street area, which takes on a big-city feel on weekends. The East Ave centers on East Avenue between Main Street and Alexander Street. The Lower East Ave east of the Inner Loop, has the busiest bars and clubs; the Upper East Ave, west of the Loop, has more sit-down cafes and restaurants. The Upper East Ave has several high-end apartments, townhouses and condos, ranging from lots to places such as Sagamore on East. Local Museums & Landmarks The Little Theater, on East Avenue, is Rochester’s only first-run art-house movie theater, often showing foreign and animated films not available anywhere else in the region. The Eastman Theatre and the Eastman School of Music are on Main Street near the lively Gibbs Street. A bit farther down East Avenue is the Rochester Museum & Science Center and the Strasenburgh Planetarium, as well as the George Eastman House and the International Museum of Photography and Film.

Essentials Finding bars and restaurants is easy in the East End. Pharmacies and supermarkets are a little farther away. The closest pharmacies are in the nearby Park Avenue neighborhood, and the closest supermarket is a Wegmans at the corner of East Avenue and Winton Road. The East End is close to the Downtown (Central) Library and the post office on Cumberland Street, which used to be the main post office in the region before the Henrietta post office assumed that position. East End has salons and barber shops, small groceries, tailors and dry cleaners. The closest hospital is either Rochester General Hospital to the north or Strong Memorial Hospital, to the southeast. The former Genesee Hospital, on Alexander Street, has been converted to medical offices and other businesses.

Essentials

Finding bars and restaurants is easy in the East End. Pharmacies and supermarkets are a little farther away. The closest pharmacies are in the nearby Park Avenue neighborhood, and the closest supermarket is a Wegmans at the corner of East Avenue and Winton Road.

Students from the Eastman School of Music give the area an even more vibrant and international buzz. The Little Theatre has live music and events along with its eclectic mix of movies. Next to the Little is Spot Coffee, a popular café in a former art deco auto dealership building. The restaurants range from upscale to street vendors. The ever-growing jazz festival is one of the most popular in the Rochester area and draws thousands of people from all over the country.

Recreation & Entertainment

The East End neighborhood is overflowing with entertainment options, from perhaps the busiest bar scene in all of Monroe County to the cultural area including the Eastman Theatre. Students from the Eastman School of Music give the area an even more vibrant and international buzz.

Transportation & Traffic Parking can be difficult for visitors on weekend nights, and some roads are closed during the jazz festival and each of the East End festivals. The Inner Loop, part of Interstate 490, provides easy access around downtown. There are a few parking garages in the area, along with metered parking on streets. East Avenue is a lovely stroll or drive, lined with the mansions of Rochester aristocracy from years ago (most of which have been converted to offices or businesses). Main Street can be confusing for newcomers, with one-way side streets typical of downtown areas.

Transportation & Traffic

Parking can be difficult for visitors on weekend nights, and some roads are closed during the jazz festival and each of the East End festivals. The Inner Loop, part of Interstate 490, provides easy access around downtown. There are a few parking garages in the area, along with metered parking on streets.

Pros & Cons The East End is a magnificent place to live if you like to be in the heart of downtown. Developers have been adding more housing to the area in recent years. Traffic can be intense on weekends and during festivals, and the area can be noisy.
