Overview Brookfield is a large town in the southeastern corner of Madison County, bordered to the north by Oneida County (town of Augusta), to the east by Otsego County (town of Plainfield), to the south by Chenango County (town of Columbus) and to the west by Hamilton and Madison. Brookfield is one of the largest towns by volume in the county. The town has plenty of wide-open space for outdoor activities; the Unadilla River flows at the eastern edge of Brookfield. Here, you’re close to busier Hamilton and Colgate University and just north, to Turning Stone Casino and Resort, the busiest attraction in the region. Brookfield has several hamlets and is home to the annual county agricultural fair. Several large state forests are in the area. Local Museums & Landmarks The Wheeler House Complex in the hamlet of Leonardsville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The old Crandall Department Store in Leonardsville has been converted into the regionally known Horned Dorset Restaurant. Neighboring Hamilton is home to Colgate University (about 11 miles west) and several sites worth seeing. The Hamilton Village Historic District is made up of several late 19th-century buildings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also on the Register are Colgate University’s Old Biology Hall, the Adon Smith House, and the U.S. Post Office building. In the nearby village of Earlville (13 miles southwest of Brookfield) you’ll find the Earlville Opera House, a National Historic Landmark that was built in 1892, and Quincy Square Museum.

For grocery shopping, Hamilton has a Price Chopper supermarket. The closest Tops Friendly Markets grocery store is in Sherrill, Oneida County (about 31 miles northwest of Brookfield. For major retail shopping, the closest stores include a Walmart Supercenter in Oneida (about 32 miles north) and in Utica, which has a wider variety of options and is 30 miles northeast of Brookfield. There are no Wegmans supermarkets nearby. The Brookfield Central School District serves the area and has one each elementary and secondary school. The closest hospital is Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton. The closest library is Hamilton Public Library.
