Overview

Brookfield is a large town in the southeastern corner of Madison County, bordered to the north by Oneida County (town of Augusta), to the east by Otsego County (town of Plainfield), to the south by Chenango County (town of Columbus) and to the west by Hamilton and Madison. Brookfield is one of the largest towns by volume in the county. The town has plenty of wide-open space for outdoor activities; the Unadilla River flows at the eastern edge of Brookfield.



Essentials

You’re not going to find much shopping or other attractions in Brookfield. This is a sparsely populated, wide-open town, but neighboring towns have more. For grocery shopping, Hamilton has a Price Chopper supermarket. The closest Tops Friendly Markets grocery store is in Sherrill, Oneida County (about 31 miles northwest of Brookfield.



Recreation & Entertainment

What you get in Brookfield is open space, so the town is big on hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, snowmobiling and other outdoor activities. For more things to do, neighboring Hamilton has a classic movie theater that shows first-run movies and several attractions on the Colgate University campus, including a science center/planetarium, a performing-arts theater, an art gallery, and a lively business district.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 12 heads north-south on the west side of Brookfield and Route 8 does the same on the east side.



Pros & Cons

Brookfield is one of the biggest towns, size-wise, in the county. It also has a population of only about 2,400 so you get lots of undeveloped land here. Brookfield hosts the annual county agricultural fair and it’s close to Hamilton and Colgate University.
