Overview

Cazenovia is a town on the western edge of Madison County, bordered to the north by Sullivan, to the east by Fenner and Nelson, to the south by DeRuyter and to the west by Onondaga County (town of Pompey). The town includes a village, also named Cazenovia, and within the town borders is Cazenovia Lake. The lake is surrounded by historic mansions, many of which have been converted into bed-and-breakfast establishments. Cazenovia has long been a popular, upscale summer vacation area. The Brewster Inn has played host to numerous VIPs, like President Bill Clinton. The town has dozens of historic sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Cazenovia College, a small, liberal arts school, is here. Chittenango Falls State Park, which features a 167-foot waterfall, also is in the town. There are numerous other attractions here, including an outdoor sculpture park, equine centers, performing-arts theaters, a renewable-energy education center and wineries.


Essentials

Cazenovia offers all kinds of upscale shopping in the Cazenovia Historic Business District. There, you’ll find antique shops, art galleries, coffee houses, boutiques, gift shops and more. For grocery shopping, Cazenovia has a Tops Friendly Markets store on Nelson Street. The Cazenovia Farmers Market sells local produce in warm-weather months.



Recreation & Entertainment

Cazenovia has a wide range of things to do, including the Catherine Cummings Theatre for plays and musicals and the Nelson Odeon, a small performance center that features national acts. Cazenovia College offers various entertainment options throughout the year. Canterbury Stables and the Cazenovia College Equine Education Center and Skanda Equine all offer horse-back riding. The Stone Quarry Hill Art Park has a trail of outdoor sculptures and is linked by a trail to places like a state forest and wildlife management area. Cazenovia Lake, of course, offers all kinds of outdoor activities as does Chittenango Falls State Park.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 20, known in Cazenovia as Albany Street, passes east-west through town. Route 13 heads north-south through Cazenovia.



Pros & Cons

Cazenovia is an upscale community that’s popular with summertime visitors drawn to the quaint village, the charming Cazenovia Lake and the numerous shops and eateries. There’s plenty of history here and lots of interesting outdoor attractions (like Chittenango Falls State Park). Syracuse is only half an hour west.
