OverviewDeRuyter is a town in the southwest corner of Madison County, bordered to the north by Cazenovia, to the east by Georgetown, to the south by Chenango County (town of Lincklaen) and to the west by Cortland County (town of Cuyler) and Onondaga County (town of Fabius). DeRuyter includes a village, also named DeRuyter, and a few hamlets. DeRuyter is a rural community and one of the most sparsely populated towns in the county, with only about 1,600 residents.
DeRuyter Lake, which is actually a reservoir, is one of the largest bodies of water in the area. Several state forests are within or just outside the town of DeRuyter’s borders, making this area great for fishing, hiking, hunting and other outdoor activities. Chittenango Falls State Park is in Cazenovia. Syracuse is 35 miles northwest.
Local Museums & Landmarks
The Seventh Day Baptist Church in the village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby Cazenovia (15 miles north of DeRuyter) is home to Cazenovia Lake, a popular summertime resort area, and Cazenovia College. Cazenovia also has Lorenzo State Historic Site (which includes a mansion, gardens and arboretum), The Museum at Cazenovia Public Library (featuring artifacts like Native American tools and an Egyptian mummy), and Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, which has outdoor sculptures placed throughout 100 scenic acres. More than two dozen sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places can be found in Cazenovia, including the village’s business district. |
