Overview

DeRuyter is a town in the southwest corner of Madison County, bordered to the north by Cazenovia, to the east by Georgetown, to the south by Chenango County (town of Lincklaen) and to the west by Cortland County (town of Cuyler) and Onondaga County (town of Fabius). DeRuyter includes a village, also named DeRuyter, and a few hamlets. DeRuyter is a rural community and one of the most sparsely populated towns in the county, with only about 1,600 residents.



Essentials

For grocery shopping, DeRuyter has a Big M supermarket. There’s a Tops Friendly Markets store in Cazenovia. The closest Wegmans supermarket is in Fayetteville, Onondaga County (about 21 miles northwest). For retail shopping, DeRuyter has smaller stores like Family Dollar. Otherwise, it’s a quick drive to Syracuse and its suburbs, where you’ll find stores like Walmart and Target and malls with stores like Sears and JC Penney.



Recreation & Entertainment

Being such a rural community, the main recreation options here are outdoor types like fishing, hunting, hiking and camping. DeRuyter Lake is one of the largest bodies of water in the area. For hiking, several state forests are in or near DeRuyter. Cazenovia has the Catherine Cummings Theatre for plays and musicals; Canterbury Stables, the Cazenovia College Equine Education Center and Skanda Equine all offer horse-back riding.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 13 is the main road here, running east-west as Cortland Street into the village, and then heading north-south as Utica Street. Route 58 heads east from the village.



Pros & Cons

People move to DeRuyter because of its rural nature and wide-open space. There are plenty of places for hunting, fishing and hiking, and if you’re looking for more attractions, busier Cazenovia is just north of DeRuyter.
