Overview

Hamilton is a town on the southern edge of eastern Madison County, bordered to the north by Madison, to the east by Brookfield, to the south by Chenango County (town of Sherburne) and to the west by Lebanon. Hamilton is best known as home to Colgate University, a private, liberal-arts college established in 1819 with an enrollment of just under 3,000 students. The college adds a lively atmosphere to the town and its village (also named Hamilton). Part of the village of Earlville also is in the southwest corner of town; the rest is in Chenango County.



Essentials

Hamilton offers a number of shopping choices. The retail district in the village of Hamilton features several specialty shops, boutiques, restaurants and an independent bookstore. Hamilton also has small retail stores like Family Dollar. For grocery shopping, Hamilton has a Price Chopper supermarket. The closest Tops Friendly Markets grocery store is in the city of Sherrill, Oneida County, about 19 miles north of Hamilton. The closest Wegmans supermarket is 31 miles northwest in Fayetteville, Onondaga County. For more retail shopping, there’s a Walmart Supercenter in the city of Oneida, about 20 miles northwest of Hamilton.



Recreation & Entertainment

Colgate University adds a lot of zest to this otherwise agricultural, farming community. On campus, you’ll find the Colgate Ho Science Center (which has a planetarium and other attractions), the Palace Theatre (for performing arts) and the Picker Art Gallery. Evergreen Gallery is an art gallery in downtown Hamilton. There’s a first-run, historic movie theater. In the southwest part of town, the Earlville Opera House, a historic landmark, offers more than two dozen concerts annually.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 12B runs north-south through the heart of the town and village. Route 26 is another north-south roadway. Route 20, which goes east-west, is just north of Hamilton.



Pros & Cons

The college atmosphere of Colgate University makes Hamilton one of the livelier towns in the region. The rest of the town is still mostly agricultural. The two villages have a number of interesting and historic sites. The cities of Oneida and Utica are quick drives from Hamilton.
