Welcome to Lebanon, NY

Overview

Lebanon is a town on the southern end of central Madison County, bordered to the north by Eaton, to the east by Hamilton, to the south by Chenango County (town of Smyrna) and to the west by Georgetown. Lebanon has only about 1,300 residents and several hamlets but no village, although the village of Hamilton (in the neighboring town of the same name) is just minutes away.

Essentials

Most shopping is in nearby towns, some quite a ways away and others not so far. For grocery shopping, Hamilton has a Price Chopper supermarket. The closest Tops Friendly Markets stores are in Cazenovia (22 miles northwest) and in the city of Sherrill in Oneida County (about 24 miles north of Lebanon).

Recreation & Entertainment

Like most of the towns on Madison County’s southern end, Lebanon is rural, so the wide-open spaces here are best known for outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling and hiking. There are several state forests nearby. Neighboring Hamilton, home to Colgate University, offers a wider variety of things to do and see, including a first-run, historic movie theater, along with the Colgate Ho Science Center (which has a planetarium and other attractions), the Palace Theatre (for performing arts) and the Picker Art Gallery.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 71 passes through the western edge of Lebanon. Route 12B goes through the eastern side of town.

Pros & Cons

Lebanon is for those who enjoy wide-open spaces, but it’s close to the college town of Hamilton, which is home to Colgate University. This area is peaceful, small-town living where you’ll even find some Amish in their horse-and-buggies.
