Overview

Lenox is in northern Madison County, bordered to the north by Oneida Lake (and to the northeast by Verona, Oneida County), to the east by the town and city of Oneida, to the south by Lincoln and to the west by Sullivan. Lenox has two villages – Wampsville, the county seat, and Canastota, home to the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum. The town also includes several hamlets. The Erie Canal runs through Lenox, and the Thruway exits at Canastota. Turning Stone Casino, the biggest attraction in the region, is in neighboring Verona. Oneida Lake is popular for boating, fishing, swimming, and camping. Lenox is about halfway from Syracuse (to the west) and Utica (to the east); both are about 30 miles away.



Essentials

For grocery shopping, Canastota has a Tops Friendly Markets store on Route 5 and smaller grocers like Nice n Easy. The closest Wegmans supermarket is in Fayetteville, about 17 miles west (in Onondaga County). For major retail shopping, Oneida has a Walmart Supercenter and Fayetteville has a Target store. Canastota has several small businesses.



Recreation & Entertainment

There’s quite a bit to do around here. If you like the outdoors, it’s just a short drive to Verona Beach State Park and Sylvan Beach, which is really hopping in the summer. If you like gambling, Turning Stone Casino offers slot machines and table games (and also has showrooms featuring concerts by national music acts, comedians and other entertainment).



Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway has an exit at Canastota. The Erie Canal runs through the town of Lenox. Route 13 runs north-south through town, and Route 5, which passes through small towns in the region, heads east-west.



Pros & Cons

Lenox’s midway location between Syracuse and Utica makes it easy to travel to both cities. Oneida Lake is at the north end of town and attractions like Sylvan Beach and Verona Beach State Park are nearby. The International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota draws big crowds to its induction ceremony. The village of Wampsville is the county seat. The largest casino in the region, Turning Stone, is a quick drive away.
