OverviewLenox is in northern Madison County, bordered to the north by Oneida Lake (and to the northeast by Verona, Oneida County), to the east by the town and city of Oneida, to the south by Lincoln and to the west by Sullivan. Lenox has two villages – Wampsville, the county seat, and Canastota, home to the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum. The town also includes several hamlets. The Erie Canal runs through Lenox, and the Thruway exits at Canastota. Turning Stone Casino, the biggest attraction in the region, is in neighboring Verona. Oneida Lake is popular for boating, fishing, swimming, and camping. Lenox is about halfway from Syracuse (to the west) and Utica (to the east); both are about 30 miles away.
The city of Oneida, only about 4 miles northeast, has a number of attractions and places to shop. Just north of Canastota is the village of Sylvan Beach, which is a popular summertime attraction with a beach, small amusement park and lively summertime restaurants and bars, and Verona Beach State Park. Both are on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake.
Local Museums & Landmarks The International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum in Canastota is a growing attraction that draws visitors from all over for its annual induction ceremony. Canastota has a number of sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Canal Town Museum, the South Peterboro Street Commercial Historic District (as well as a historic residential district), the Canastota Methodist Church and the United Church of Canastota, and the Judge Nathan S. Roberts House. The biggest landmark in the region is Turning Stone Casino, only 8 miles northeast of Lenox. |
