Overview

Nelson is a town in south-central Madison County, bordered to the north by Fenner and Smithfield, to the east by Eaton, to the south by Georgetown, and to the west by Cazenovia (and a small part of DeRuyter). Nelson is a rural community of just under 2,000 residents. People who live here enjoy the natural beauty of attractions like Stoney Pond State Forest, Tuscarora Lake and Nelson Swamp.


Essentials

Nelson has only a few small businesses and shops. Most shopping needs can be met in neighboring communities. For groceries, Cazenovia has a Tops Friendly Markets store on Nelson Street, and Morrisville has a Big M and Express Mart. The closest Wegmans supermarket is in Fayetteville, Onondaga County (about 16 miles northwest of Nelson). Dollar General stores can be found in Chittenango (13 miles northwest) and Canastota (13 miles north).



Recreation & Entertainment

The Nelson Odeon is a converted Grange lodge now used for community performances such as live music. Nelson is largely a rural community, where the big attractions are hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and other outdoor activities. Cazenovia has a wide range of things to do, including the Catherine Cummings Theatre for plays and musicals as well as Canterbury Stables, the Cazenovia College Equine Education Center and Skanda Equine for horse-back riding.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 20 runs east-west through the town of Nelson. Route 67 is the main north-south route.



Pros & Cons

Nelson is a small, quiet town with lots of natural beauty and wide-open space. You’re just minutes away from Cazenovia and Morrisville, both of which have colleges and more attractions.
