Recreation & Entertainment Peterboro is an historic hamlet known for its anti-slavery activism. The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, which tells the story of these abolitionists, is in Peterboro, as is the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark. Oneida has attractions including a movie-theater complex. Canastota is the home of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum, where large crowds turn out for the annual induction ceremony. Cazenovia has lots of attractions and is especially popular with summertime tourists drawn to the quaint downtown.
About 14 miles east of Smithfield is the always-busy Turning Stone Casino in Verona, Oneida County, which features not only gambling but showrooms that draw national recording acts and comedians. About 18 miles north is Sylvan Beach, on the eastern edge of Oneida Lake, which has an old-fashioned amusement park, a popular swimming beach and more. Just before Sylvan Beach is Verona Beach State Park. Vernon Downs Casino and Hotel (which includes a horse-racing track) also is nearby, about 14 miles northeast of Peterboro in Vernon, Oneida County. |
