Overview

Smithfield is a town in central Madison County, bordered to the north by Lincoln and part of Stockbridge, to the east by Stockbridge, to the south by Eaton and Nelson and to the west by Fenner. Smithfield includes the historic hamlet of Peterboro, home to the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum and other attractions.


Essentials

For grocery shopping, the closest Tops Friendly Markets stores are in Canastota (about 9 miles north of Peterboro) and in Cazenovia (about 10 miles west). The closest Wegmans supermarket is in Fayetteville, Onondaga County, about 23 miles northwest. For major retail shopping, there’s a Walmart Supercenter in the city of Oneida (about 9 miles northeast). Oneida also has smaller stores, like Dollar General and Dollar Tree and Big Lots.



Recreation & Entertainment

Peterboro is an historic hamlet known for its anti-slavery activism. The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, which tells the story of these abolitionists, is in Peterboro, as is the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark. Oneida has attractions including a movie-theater complex.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 25 heads north-south through town, and Route 32 travels east-west. Route 54, another north-south highway, is just east of Smithfield.



Pros & Cons

This is a small town with lots of history. Most of the activities here are of the outdoor variety, but there are lots of things to do (and places to shop and dine) within a quick drive of Smithfield.
