Welcome to Sullivan, NY

Overview

Sullivan is a town in the northwest corner of Madison County, bordered to the north by Oneida Lake, to the east by Lenox and Lincoln, to the south by Fenner and Cazenovia, and to the west by Chittenango Creek (and beyond that, DeWitt, Onondaga County). The town of Sullivan includes the village of Chittenango and several hamlets, some of them settled around Oneida Lake.

Essentials

For grocery shopping, Chittenango has a Tops Friendly Markets store on West Genesee Street and smaller grocers like Nice n Easy. The closest Wegmans supermarket is in DeWitt, Onondaga County (about 11 miles west of Chittenango). For retail shopping, Sullivan has smaller stores like Dollar General. For a wider variety of shopping options, there’s a Walmart Supercenter in East Syracuse (about 11 miles west) and several large malls in Syracuse, like Carousel Center.

Recreation & Entertainment

Along with all of the “Oz” attractions in Chittenango, there are many other things to do and see around here. Oneida Lake, at the northern end of town, is popular for boating, swimming, fishing and camping. The Chittenango Landing Boat Museum tells the history of cargo boats on the Erie Canal. The Wild Animal Park in Chittenango is open from Memorial Day to October and features tigers, bears, zebras and a petting zoo.

Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) runs through Sullivan. Route 5 runs east-west through town. Northbound routes include Route 13 and Route 3.

Pros & Cons

The quaint village of Chittenango draws tourists to the “Wizard of Oz” attractions, and outdoor types head to Oneida Lake. Sullivan is a short drive to Syracuse and it eastern suburbs, but much quieter and less busy. Proximity to the Thruway is a plus.
