Welcome to Sullivan, NY

Overview Sullivan is a town in the northwest corner of Madison County, bordered to the north by Oneida Lake, to the east by Lenox and Lincoln, to the south by Fenner and Cazenovia, and to the west by Chittenango Creek (and beyond that, DeWitt, Onondaga County). The town of Sullivan includes the village of Chittenango and several hamlets, some of them settled around Oneida Lake. Chittenango is known for its “Wizard of Oz” ties; the author of the book (which was made into the famous movie) was L. Frank Baum, who was born in Chittenango. The village holds an annual “Oz-Stravaganza” festival to honor Baum and the “Wizard of Oz.” Many businesses in the village have adopted an Oz theme (like “Auntie Em’s Place). A largely rural community, Sullivan is just east of the much busier city of Syracuse, which has all kinds of attractions. Local Museums & Landmarks The biggest “attractions” in Chittenango are the Wizard of Oz attractions. There’s a group called “All Things Oz” with more than 1,000 items related to Oz author Baum. The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum is within the Old Erie Canal State Historic Park. The Chittenango Landing Dry Dock Complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Oneida Lake Congregational Church also is listed on the Register. The village of Canastota (about 8 miles east) has several historic sites and also is home to the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum.

Essentials For grocery shopping, Chittenango has a Tops Friendly Markets store on West Genesee Street and smaller grocers like Nice n Easy. The closest Wegmans supermarket is in DeWitt, Onondaga County (about 11 miles west of Chittenango). For retail shopping, Sullivan has smaller stores like Dollar General. For a wider variety of shopping options, there’s a Walmart Supercenter in East Syracuse (about 11 miles west) and several large malls in Syracuse, like Carousel Center. The Chittenango Central School District serves the area and has one each high school and middle school and three elementary schools. Sullivan Free Library is the area’s public library, located on Falls Boulevard in Chittenango. The closest hospitals – Crouse Hospital, Upstate Medical University Hospital, and St. Joseph’s Hospital – are all in Syracuse.

Just east of the town of Sullivan, in the town of Lenox, the village of Canastota is the home of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum, which holds an annual induction ceremony that draws visitors from all over.

Pros & Cons The quaint village of Chittenango draws tourists to the “Wizard of Oz” attractions, and outdoor types head to Oneida Lake. Sullivan is a short drive to Syracuse and it eastern suburbs, but much quieter and less busy. Proximity to the Thruway is a plus.
