Welcome to Covert, NY

Overview

Covert is a town in the southeast corner of Seneca County, bordered to the north by Ovid, to the east by Cayuga Lake, to the south by Schuyler County and Tompkins County, and to the west by Lodi. Covert is northwest of the bustling college town of Ithaca. The town of Covert includes the village of Interlaken and several lakeside hamlets. Part of the vast Finger Lakes National Forest is in Covert, as well as part of Taughannock State Park (the majority is in Tompkins County).

Essentials

Interlaken has a small business district with services like an auto-repair shop, a Quik-Shoppe store and a bank, but for most of your shopping needs, you’ll have to drive a short distance. Trumansburg, just 7 miles southeast of Covert, has small grocery stores like a Shur-Save and the Good to Go! Trumansburg Market, and small retailers like Dollar General, a hardware store, a liquor store and a couple of pharmacies. For a wider variety of grocery shopping, the closest Wegmans supermarket is in Ithaca. Tops Friendly Markets’ closest store is in Ithaca. For major retailers, the closest Walmart Supercenter also is in Ithaca.

Recreation & Entertainment

Most entertainment in Covert and Interlaken is of the outdoor variety. With Cayuga Lake at the eastern end of town, boating and fishing are the main attractions here, along with camping and wineries. Covert’s location in the heart of the Finger Lakes region means there is a lot of wide-open, beautiful space here, including Taughannock State Park, which has a spectacular waterfall and gorge trails, and Finger Lakes National Forest, a great place for hiking.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 89 and Route 96 are north-south highways that run through Covert. Route 96A joins route 96 in the village of Interlaken.

Pros & Cons

Like most of the towns in Seneca County, Covert is appealing because of its location near Cayuga Lake and, a bit farther west, Seneca Lake. This area is largely undeveloped with plenty of natural beauty. There are several state parks within a short drive, and proximity to Ithaca is a plus.
