Welcome to Junius, NY

Overview

Junius is a sparsely populated town in the northwest corner of Seneca County, bordered to the north by Wayne County (town of Galen), to the east by Tyre, to the south by Waterloo and to the west by Ontario County (town of Phelps). Junius has only about 1,300 residents; the town includes a couple of hamlets and a cluster of ponds near the western town line called Junius Ponds. This is mainly a wide-open town, with the biggest attractions being campgrounds.

Essentials

You’ll have to travel a short ways for most shopping and entertainment options. Waterloo, about 6 miles south, has the Waterloo Premium Outlets, which has a slew of factory outlet stores like Ann Taylor, Aeropostale, Eddie Bauer and Brooks Brothers, along with a Walmart Supercenter and a Tops Friendly Markets store for groceries. The closest Wegmans supermarket is in Geneva (about 13 miles southwest). Geneva also has a Tops Friendly Markets and a Walmart and a wide variety of restaurants on Routes 5 & 20.

Recreation & Entertainment

Outdoor activities are the main attraction here, like hunting and fishing. Seneca Lake, which is world-renowned for lake-trout fishing, is a short drive southwest of Junius. Wine lovers flock to the area – the Finger Lakes Wine Trail passes by dozens of wineries that line the shores of Seneca Lake and, to the east, Cayuga Lake. Seneca Lake State Park is in Geneva and Waterloo and offers daytime activities like picnicking as well as a boat launch. Cayuga Lakes State Park in Seneca Falls (about 14 miles southeast) also has a beach and offers camping. Geneva has a movie-theater multiplex, bowling and plenty of shopping and restaurants.

Transportation & Traffic

The very busy New York State Thruway passes through Junius heading east-west. Route 318 is an east-west highway and Route 414 goes north-south through the extreme northeastern part of town.

Pros & Cons

Junius is a wide-open town with little development. But there are plenty of places to shop and eat and plenty of things to do nearby. Two of the largest Finger Lakes, Seneca and Cayuga, are just short drives away, along with the popular Finger Lakes Wine Trail.
