Welcome to Ovid, NY

Overview

Ovid is a town near the southern end of Seneca County, bordered to the north by Romulus, to the east by Cayuga Lake (and beyond that, the town of Ledyard in Cayuga County), to the south by Lodi and Covert and to the west by Seneca Lake (and beyond that, the town of Penn Yan in Yates County).

Essentials

The village of Ovid has a small business district with stores like a Big M supermarket, a Dollar General store, an auto parts shop and a liquor store. Most other shopping needs can be met within a short drive. For groceries, the closest Wegmans supermarket is in Geneva, Ontario County (about 21 miles northwest) and the closest Tops Friendly Markets store is in Waterloo. Waterloo also has a Walmart Supercenter and the popular Premium Outlets Mall, which attracts shoppers from all over for factory outlet stores from retailers like Eddie Bauer, Ann Taylor and more.

Recreation & Entertainment

Most people come to Ovid for the natural beauty and wide-open spaces – the town, like others in Seneca County, is nestled between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake, two of the largest of the Finger Lakes. Consequently, fishing, boating and camping are popular activities here.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 96, Route 96A and Route 414 converge in the village of Ovid. Route 89 runs north-south near the shoreline of Cayuga Lake. Getting to the towns east and west of Ovid takes some time by motor vehicle, because Seneca and Cayuga Lakes are long and wide. It’s probably quicker to do so by boat.

Pros & Cons

Like most of the towns in Seneca County, Ovid is best known for its rural character and its location between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake. Boating, fishing and camping are the big attractions here. Major highways make it fairly easy to get around. Nearby Geneva has several places to visit and shop and things to do.
