Welcome to Butler, NY

Overview

The Town of Butler is in central-eastern Wayne County, bordering Cayuga County to the east, and south of the town of Wolcott. Butler has about 2,200 residents, making it among the least-populated towns in the county, and includes four hamlets. The town has ridges and valleys running north and south and agriculture is the main industry. The hamlet of South Butler once was a bustling community with a saw mill, a tannery and the Hibbard Basket Works Company, as well as two general stores and other businesses. Today, South Butler is a quiet, residential community.

Essentials

The North Rose-Wolcott Central School District has three schools, a high school, middle school and elementary school. Residents use either the Wolcott Civic Free Library to the north, the Rose Free Library to the west or the Clyde-Savannah Public Library to the southwest. The South Butler Post Office is at 3453 State Route 89.

Recreation & Entertainment

Fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities are the big attractions here. The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful place for bird-watching and checking out animals. Movie theaters are in Wolcott, to the north, and in Lyons and Newark to the southwest.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 89 is the main north-south roadway, cutting right through Butler. Route 89 leads to Route 104, the main east-west highway in the region. The Thruway is about 20 miles south. As Butler is extremely rural, traffic is not an issue here.

Pros & Cons

Living here, you’re closer to Syracuse (about 40 miles) than to Rochester (about 48 miles), and you’re close to the Finger Lakes region, particularly to Cayuga Lake. You’re also not far from Seneca Falls and Auburn. This is a wide-open rural area that is popular with outdoor-type people. You’ll have to travel to nearby towns for most shopping, services and recreation.
