Welcome to Walworth, NY

Overview

The Town of Walworth is in the middle of the western edge of Wayne County, bordering Monroe County and created from Ontario, its neighbor to the north and the last town formed in Wayne County. This has always been primarily a farming community, with hilly terrain and swamplands in the lowland areas between the hills. The swamplands were drained, forming muck lands with rich black soil which is great for crops like potatoes and onions. Walworth contains three hamlets and the planned community of Gananda, which was created in 1971 through the federal Housing and Urban Development agency near the south town line.

Essentials

Students here attend the Wayne Central School District or the Gananda Central School District. The larger Wayne district, with about 2,500 students, has a high school, middle school, two elementary schools and a primary school. Gananda has one each high school, middle school and elementary school. The town has two parks.

Recreation & Entertainment

Movie theaters are in Macedon’s Canaltown Cinema, to the south, and Newark’s Showplace 6, a bit farther away to the southeast. A go-kart track also is in Macedon, and Spencer Speedway, a racetrack, is to the northeast in Williamson. The town of Penfield, in Monroe County, is about 11 miles almost due west. The town of Webster, also in Monroe County and about 14 miles northwest, also has a multiplex and a bowling center.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 441 runs east-west through Walworth. County Road 208 runs north-south through the town. Traffic gets heavier on 441 toward the west, in the Penfield area.

Pros & Cons

Walworth is close enough to Monroe County to be considered a bedroom community. The town is quiet and mainly rural. Plans for Gananda fell short of expectations when federal funding ran out – the community was planned as a city with 90,000 residents, but there are fewer than 10,000 living there.
