You’ll have to travel a short distance for most shopping needs, but the drives are not long. For groceries, Penn Yan has a Top’s Friendly Markets store along with Aldi’s and Byrne Dairy. Penn Yan also has a few smaller retail stores like Ace Hardware. To the north in Geneva, you’ll find a Wegmans supermarket at 300 Hamilton St. and a Tops Friendly Markets store at 381 Hamilton St. for groceries; for retail shopping, Geneva has a vibrant downtown area with smaller stores and a few national chains, as well as a Walmart Supercenter on Routes 5 & 20 store and a Peebles at 333 Hamilton St. There’s an antique co-op store on Main Street. Penn Yan also has a popular outdoor market called The Windmill, which has dozens of vendors in the warm-weather months.

Recreation & Entertainment

Like most towns in Yates County, Benton is best known for the Finger Lakes, so boating, fishing, camping and other outdoor activities are tops here. The Finger Lakes Wine Trail passes through Benton along Route 14, which hugs the shoreline of Seneca Lake and has dozens of wineries.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 14 heads north-south through Benton. Route 364 runs predominantly east-west through the southwest corner of Benton.

Pros & Cons

People settle here for the peace and quiet and the lovely scenery, dominated by Seneca Lake. This rural community is close to the busier village of Penn Yan and not far from the even-busier city of Geneva.
