Overview Benton is a town in the northeast corner of Yates County, bordered to the north by Ontario County (town of Seneca and city of Geneva), to the east by Seneca Lake and the town of Torrey, to the south by the towns of Milo, Jerusalem, and part of Torrey, and to the west by Potter. Benton includes a handful of hamlets and part of the village of Penn Yan. This area is in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, and Benton is a lightly populated town with plenty of undeveloped areas and lots of farmland. The biggest attractions are the lakes, which draw visitors from all over to enjoy boating, fishing, camping and picnicking in the warm-weather months. Benton has several miles of property fronting Seneca Lake, one of the largest of the Finger Lakes, with spectacular views overlooking vineyards and wineries that are abundant in the region. Penn Yan, only six miles south of Benton, is the most developed nearby area with several restaurants and a few stores. The larger city of Geneva is only 13 miles northeast of Benton. Local Museums/Landmarks Benton has several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Angus Cobblestone Farmhouse and Barn Complex, the Barden Cobblestone Farmhouse, the Jephtha Earl Cobblestone Farmhouse, the William Nichols Cobblestone Farmhouse, the Whitaker House, and the Abner Woodworth House.

Essentials You’ll have to travel a short distance for most shopping needs, but the drives are not long. For groceries, Penn Yan has a Top’s Friendly Markets store along with Aldi’s and Byrne Dairy. Penn Yan also has a few smaller retail stores like Ace Hardware. To the north in Geneva, you’ll find a Wegmans supermarket at 300 Hamilton St. and a Tops Friendly Markets store at 381 Hamilton St. for groceries; for retail shopping, Geneva has a vibrant downtown area with smaller stores and a few national chains, as well as a Walmart Supercenter on Routes 5 & 20 store and a Peebles at 333 Hamilton St. There’s an antique co-op store on Main Street. Penn Yan also has a popular outdoor market called The Windmill, which has dozens of vendors in the warm-weather months. Benton is served by the Penn Yan Central School District, which has an elementary school, middle school and the Penn Yan Academy high school. The closest hospitals are Soldiers & Sailors in Penn Yan and Geneva General in Geneva. The Penn Yan Public Library serves residents of Torrey.

Keuka Lake State Park also is close by, and Watkins Glen State Park is further south of Benton..
