Welcome to Italy, NY

Overview

Italy is a town in western Yates County, bordered to the north by Middlesex, to the east by Jerusalem, to the south by Steuben County (town of Prattsburgh) and to the west by Ontario County (town of Naples). Named for the country, Italy is a small, rural town with about 1,100 residents. Italy has three hamlets but no village. Between Italy and Naples is the High Tor Wildlife Management Area, a conservation area.

Essentials

There’s not much shopping in Italy, a highly undeveloped town, but there are choices in Naples, which is only 8 miles west. Naples has a decent business center, with several restaurants and a few bars and small stores. For grocery shopping, Naples has a Shurfine Food Shop and the Naples Arrow Mart on Main Street. Prattsburgh in neighboring Steuben County is about 12 miles south and has small stores like Prattsburgh Market Place and Arrow Mart. Penn Yan, about 16 miles east, has a Tops Friendly Markets store for grocery shopping and smaller stores like Ace Hardware. Your best bet for a wider variety of shopping and entertainment options is in Canandaigua in neighboring Ontario County, which is about 24 miles northwest of Italy. For grocery shopping, Canandaigua has a Wegmans supermarket and a Tops Friendly Markets store; for retail shopping, Canandaigua has a Walmart Supercenter and other major retailers along the well-traveled Routes 5 & 20.

Recreation & Entertainment

Most recreation here is of the outdoor type – hunting, fishing, hiking and the like. Canandaigua Lake is popular for boating and fishing. Neighboring towns have more attractions than Italy. Naples, known for its wildly popular Naples Grape Festival, has several wineries and is known as an artist community. Several galleries in the area are open to the public during the Naples Open Studio Trail. This scenic area is particularly charming during the fall-foliage season; Grimes Glen and Gannett Hill Park are popular places to hike and enjoy nature in Naples. Gannett Hill Park is the highest point in Ontario County and offers spectacular views of the Bristol Hills. Grimes Glen is a long, deep gorge with two 60-foot waterfalls and is known for its variety of spring wildflowers.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 18 heads north-south through town, and Route 32 heads east-west.

Pros & Cons

You’re at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake, a popular Finger Lake for boating and fishing. The lovely village of Naples is just west of Italy. This is a sparsely populated, highly rural town.
