Overview

Middlesex is a town in the northwest corner of Yates County, bordered to the north by Ontario County (town of Gorham), to the east by Potter, to the south by the town of Italy and to the west by Canandaigua Lake. Middlesex is a small (population roughly 1,500) rural town with some natural beauty (the southern end of Canandaigua Lake).


Essentials

There’s little in the way of shopping in this rural town, but plenty of options nearby. Canandaigua is where you would head for the closest grocery and retail shopping, and Canandaigua is only 15 miles north of Middlesex. For groceries, Canandaigua has a Wegmans supermarket on the well-traveled Routes 5 & 20 corridor and a Tops Friendly Markets store on North Street at Route 332. For retail, stores like Walmart, Big Lots, T.J. Maxx and Bed, Bath & Beyond can be found on 5 & 20. A quick drive northwest is the enormous Eastview Mall in Victor. Main Street Canandaigua also has a bevy of shops, stores and restaurants.



Recreation & Entertainment

Outdoor entertainment is the main attraction. With its setting on the shores of Canandaigua Lake, Middlesex attracts boaters and fishermen and –women and has plenty of open space for camping, hunting, hiking and picnicking. You’re in the western end of the Finger Lakes region, which is known for its array of winemaking. Bristol Mountain Ski Resort is about 15 miles west of here, on the opposite side of Canandaigua Lake. For a wider variety of things to do, it’s a short drive to Canandaigua, where you’ll find a movie-theater complex, historic sites, a water park, Kershaw Park (with a swimming beach), plenty of places to shop and dine, and more.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 364, mainly heading east-west, intersects with Route 245 (heading north-south) in the hamlet of Middlesex. Being on the shores of Canandaigua Lake, you’ll find a lot of boats here.



Pros & Cons

Middlesex is a largely undeveloped town with plenty of wide-open space and natural beauty. Canandaigua Lake is spectacular. The Rochester Folk Art Guild attracts craftspeople from all over. The bustling city of Canandaigua is nearby, and Naples, known for its wineries and popular Grape Festival, also is close.
