Welcome to Middlesex, NY

Overview Middlesex is a town in the northwest corner of Yates County, bordered to the north by Ontario County (town of Gorham), to the east by Potter, to the south by the town of Italy and to the west by Canandaigua Lake. Middlesex is a small (population roughly 1,500) rural town with some natural beauty (the southern end of Canandaigua Lake). The town includes a handful of hamlets and, at the northeast corner of Middlesex, a sliver of the village of Rushville (which also is partly in Potter as well as in Ontario County). The High Tor Wildlife Management Area, a conservation area, is in the southwest part of town. The Rochester Folk Art Guild, an association of craftsmen and –women who both live and visit here, is in Middlesex. Local Museums/Landmarks Several sites in Middlesex are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Bates Cobblestone Farmhouse, the John Carr House, the Asahel Green Farm, Middlesex Center Methodist Church, Overackers Corner Schoolhouse, and Vine Valley Methodist Church. In the village of Rushville, the Milton Wilson House also is on the national register.

Essentials There’s little in the way of shopping in this rural town, but plenty of options nearby. Canandaigua is where you would head for the closest grocery and retail shopping, and Canandaigua is only 15 miles north of Middlesex. For groceries, Canandaigua has a Wegmans supermarket on the well-traveled Routes 5 & 20 corridor and a Tops Friendly Markets store on North Street at Route 332. For retail, stores like Walmart, Big Lots, T.J. Maxx and Bed, Bath & Beyond can be found on 5 & 20. A quick drive northwest is the enormous Eastview Mall in Victor. Main Street Canandaigua also has a bevy of shops, stores and restaurants. Three school districts cover Middlesex: the Marcus Whitman Central School District, the Penn Yan Central School District and the Dundee Central School District. The closest hospital is F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. A local library is the Middlesex Reading Center, a member of the Southern Tier Library Center and open a few hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Naples Library is about 10 miles southwest in lovely Naples.

Transportation & Traffic Route 364, mainly heading east-west, intersects with Route 245 (heading north-south) in the hamlet of Middlesex. Being on the shores of Canandaigua Lake, you’ll find a lot of boats here.
