Welcome to Potter, NY

Overview Potter is a town in north-central Yates County, bordered to the north by Ontario County (town of Gorham), to the east by Benton, to the south by the town of Jerusalem, and to the west by Middlesex. Like most towns in Yates County, Potter is a small town of fewer than 2,000 residents; this is a rural county in the Finger Lakes region with plenty of undeveloped land where the main attractions are the lakes. Canandaigua Lake is just west of Potter, Keuka Lake is to the south and Seneca Lake is to the east. Potter includes several hamlets and the south part of the village of Rushville, which also is in Ontario County. Flint Creek, part of the Canandaigua Lake watershed, runs through Potter and part of it has rapids used for rafting and kayaking. Local Museums/Landmarks The James Hobart House, the Arnold Potter House and the Yatesville Methodist Church all are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Essentials Being such a rural community, Potter does not have many places to shop or eat – but there are plenty of options nearby. Canandaigua, only 15 miles north of Potter, has grocery stores like Wegmans (on Routes 5 & 20) and Tops Friendly Markets (on Route 332) and major retailers like Walmart, Big Lots, T.J. Maxx and others. Canandaigua’s Main Street also is lined with smaller shops. Another nearby choice is Naples (14 miles southwest of Potter) which has smaller stores like a Shurfine Food Shop and an Arrow Mart on Main Street. Even closer is Penn Yan (9 miles east of Potter), which has a Tops Friendly Markets store, an Aldi’s grocery shop, a Peeble’s department store, a pharmacy and more. Students who live in Potter attend the Marcus Whitman Central School District, which is based in Rushville and has one each primary, intermediate, middle and high school. The closest hospitals are Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan and F.F. Thompson in Canandaigua. Potter doesn’t have its own library; the closest is the Penn Yan Public Library.

Penn Yan has a popular outdoor shopping attraction called The Windmill, which is open seasonally, and the Lake Street Plaza Theatres among its attractions. Canandaigua has a water park, a movie-theater complex, lots of restaurants and bars and historic sites. All of these nearby towns have regular summertime festivals, including the Naples Grape Festival in Naples. The Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center, which brings in national musical acts, is in Hopewell, about 16 miles north of Potter.

Pros & Cons This is a small, wide-open town with little development that will appeal to those who cherish the great outdoors. You’re in the Finger Lakes region, with all the splendor of several beautiful waterways and the robust Finger Lakes Wine Region. You’re close to the busy city of Canandaigua and even closer to Penn Yan.
